Choosing Fixtures That Survive Hard Water

Finish and mechanism are two separate decisions and the second one outlives the first. Southwest Florida water is hard, and hard water is rough on aerators, on cartridges, and on anything with a small orifice. A fixture with a ceramic disc cartridge and a serviceable aerator will keep working here long after a cheaper valve has started dripping, and replacement parts will still exist for it in ten years.

That is most of the reason we work with the lines we do. Brizo, Kohler, Hansgrohe, House of Rohl, Moen, Delta and American Standard all keep parts available and all build valves that can be rebuilt instead of thrown away. The finish is your call and always should be. The internals are where it is worth spending.

Aerators.

Scale collects here first. A faucet that has lost pressure has usually just got a clogged aerator, and that is a two minute fix rather than a new faucet.

Shower valves.

The valve body lives in the wall and the trim is what you see. Matching new trim to an existing body is possible more often than people assume, which avoids opening tile.

Toilet fill valves.

Mineral deposits keep a flapper from seating. This is the most common cause of a toilet that runs, and of a water bill that climbed quietly.

Undermount sinks.

The mounting hardware and the sealant do the work here. A poor install shows up months later as a sink that has dropped away from the counter.

What a Fixture Swap Actually Involves

The fixture is the easy part. What determines whether a swap goes smoothly is everything behind it: the shutoff valve that has not been turned since the house was built, supply lines that have gone brittle, and in an older home a drain arm or flange that is not in the condition the new fixture needs. We replace shutoffs and supply lines as part of the install rather than reusing parts that are already at the end of their life.

Bring your own fixture or have us supply it, either is fine. If you are in the middle of a remodel we will coordinate with the other trades on sequencing, because a fixture set before the tile or the counter is a fixture that gets damaged or has to come back out.

Should I buy the fixture myself or have you supply it?
Either works. We work with our supplier network or install fixtures you have already bought. For high-end brands, we can recommend models and finishes.
Do you install garbage disposals?
Yes. We install and replace all major brands of garbage disposals.
Can you do a bathroom remodel?
Yes. We handle the plumbing side of bathroom and kitchen remodels, including rough-in, fixture install, and final trim.
Will my old shutoff valves work for a new faucet?
Often yes, but we replace any shutoff valve that drips or sticks during the install.
Do you install bidet seats?
Yes. Bidet seats are a quick install and usually require an outlet near the toilet plus a connection to the existing supply line.
Can I keep my existing shower trim if I only need the valve fixed?
Often yes. The valve body lives in the wall and the trim is the visible part, and matching new trim to an existing body is possible more frequently than people assume. That matters because replacing the body means opening tile. Tell us the brand and we will check compatibility before anyone picks up a grinder.
Why does my brand new faucet already have low pressure?
Check the aerator first. Our water is hard, scale collects in that screen faster than anywhere else in the fixture, and it happens on a new faucet as readily as an old one. Unscrewing and rinsing it takes a couple of minutes and solves it most of the time. If pressure is low at every fixture rather than one, that is a different problem and worth a look.
Do you replace the shutoff valves when you install a fixture?
Yes, along with the supply lines, and we would rather you know that going in. The valve under a sink in an older home has often not been turned in decades and will not reliably reseal once it is. Reusing it to save a few dollars on install day is how a fixture swap turns into a leak six months later.
