What RO Removes and What It Does Not
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane with openings small enough to stop most dissolved solids. That is a genuinely different mechanism from a carbon filter, which adsorbs certain things and passes others. It is why RO is the right tool for drinking water and the wrong tool for the whole house: the process is slow by design and produces some wastewater, which is fine for a few gallons a day at the kitchen sink and impractical for every shower.
What it does not do is soften the water going to your water heater or your laundry. Those are different problems with different answers. If hard water is damaging fixtures throughout the home, an under-sink RO unit will not touch that, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling rather than advising.
Pre-filters.
Sediment and carbon stages run ahead of the membrane. Their real job is protecting the membrane, which is the expensive part.
The membrane.
This is the stage doing the actual separation, and it lasts considerably longer than the pre-filters ahead of it.
The storage tank.
RO produces slowly, so it fills a small pressurized tank and you draw from that. A tank that has lost its air charge is the usual reason a system seems to run out.
The dedicated faucet.
RO water comes out at its own tap rather than the main kitchen faucet, which keeps the treated water for drinking and cooking.
Where the System Goes
Almost always under the kitchen sink, which is the constraint worth checking before you buy anything. The unit and its tank need room alongside the disposal, the trap, and whatever is already stored down there. In a smaller cabinet the tank sometimes ends up in an adjacent base cabinet with a line run between them.
Running a line to the refrigerator for the ice maker and dispenser is a common add and it is worth doing at install time rather than later, because the tubing run is straightforward while the cabinet is already open.
