Main Line Breaks in Sandy Soil
A buried main is a pipe sitting in wet sand for decades, and sand moves. Between the water table, the rain cycle, and whatever settling the lot has done since it was built, a line that was laid straight and supported is not necessarily still either of those things. Add a high mineral content inside the pipe and salt air at the connection points and the failures follow a predictable pattern.
The tell is usually the yard rather than the house. A patch of grass that stays green through a dry spell, soft ground between the meter and the house, or a bill that went up while nothing indoors changed. Water surfacing where the break is would make life easy, but it often travels along the trench and surfaces somewhere else entirely, so we pressure test and locate rather than dig where it looks wet.

A failed regulator sends street pressure straight into the house, which is hard on every fixture and every supply connection at once.

How do I know if my main water line is leaking underground?
Wet spots in the yard, an unexplained spike on your water bill, or low pressure across the whole home are the typical signs. We can confirm with a pressure test.
Do you replace galvanized water lines?
Yes. Galvanized lines corrode from the inside and restrict flow. Replacement with copper or PEX is the standard fix.
How long does a main water line replacement take?
Most residential main line replacements finish in one day, including the excavation and restoration of the work area.
Is a hose bib repair something I should call about?
Yes. A leaking hose bib wastes water and can damage exterior walls. They are a quick repair for our techs.
There is a wet spot in my yard. Is that my line or the utility line?
The meter is the dividing line. From the meter to the house is yours, from the meter to the main is the utility. A wet patch on the house side of the meter is generally yours to repair. Water travels along the trench before it surfaces, though, so the wet spot is not necessarily above the break, which is why we pressure test and locate rather than dig on appearances.
What is a pressure regulator and how do I know mine failed?
It is the valve that steps street pressure down to something your plumbing is built for. When one fails it usually fails open, so the house sees full street pressure. The signs are fixtures that suddenly bang or hammer, supply connections weeping, and a toilet that runs after every flush. It is a contained repair and worth doing quickly, because high pressure is hard on everything at once.
