Why Plumbing Emergencies Are Different in Southwest Florida
When a pipe fails in Naples or Bonita Springs, the climate makes the damage worse, faster. Humidity accelerates mold growth in wet drywall and cabinet bases within 24 to 48 hours. Tile floors hide water under the slab. Hurricane season puts every property at risk, and storm surge pushes saltwater into supply lines and water heaters that were never built for it. What to Do in the First Five Minutes
Before you call anyone, find the water. Most Southwest Florida homes have a main shutoff at the house and a meter box near the street with a valve inside it. Closing either one stops the damage while you wait, and the difference between a five minute leak and a fifty minute leak is usually the difference between drying a floor and replacing it.
If you do not know where your shutoff is, the time to find it is not during the emergency. Walk out and look for it this week. On a slab home it is often on an exterior wall near the hose bib, on the side of the house closest to the street.
Water heater leaking.
Shut the cold inlet valve on top of the unit. On a gas unit turn the control to off, on an electric unit kill the breaker.
Sewage backing up.
Stop running water anywhere in the house, including the washing machine and dishwasher. Every gallon you send down adds to what comes up.
Smell of gas.
Do not operate switches or anything that sparks. Leave, then call the gas utility from outside. That call comes before the call to us.
Ceiling bulging or dripping.
Move what is under it and put a container down. A bulge is water held by paint and it will let go.
Storm Season and Vacant Homes
Two things drive our after-hours volume here. The first is storm season, when power cuts and pressure swings surface problems that were already marginal. The second is the seasonal pattern of this coast: a house closed up in April and opened in November has had six months for a supply line to weep behind a wall with nobody home to notice.
If you leave a home seasonally, shutting the main and draining the system is worth the ten minutes. We get called to a lot of returns that did not need to happen.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Active leaks, burst pipes, sewage backups, no hot water before guests arrive, suspected gas leaks, water heater failures with active water damage, and any situation where the water has to stay off until we arrive. Do you charge extra for nights, weekends, or holidays?
We quote every emergency job up front before work begins. You see the price and approve it before we open anything. There are no surprise after-hours charges added to the bill at the end.
What should I do before you arrive for a leak emergency?
If you can safely reach the main water shutoff to the house, turn it off. If the leak is at a specific fixture, the local shutoff under the sink or behind the toilet is enough. For water heater leaks, shut the cold supply line into the unit and, for gas heaters, turn the gas off if you can do so safely. Then call us. We can walk you through this on the phone.
Do you handle gas leak emergencies?
Yes, our team is fully licensed for natural gas and LP propane. If you smell gas, leave the house first, call your gas utility from outside, then call us. We can isolate, repair, and pressure-test the line on the same visit in most cases.

On most Southwest Florida slab homes it is on an exterior wall on the street side of the house, often near a hose bib, and there is a second valve in the meter box at the curb. Go find yours before you need it. The gap between a five minute leak and a fifty minute leak is usually just knowing where that valve is.
