Cast Iron and Clay Under Older Naples Homes
What the line is made of tells you most of what will go wrong with it. Homes built in Naples and Fort Myers before the mid 1970s were generally plumbed with cast iron below the slab and sometimes clay outside it. Both were reasonable materials at the time and both have a finite life. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, scaling until the passage narrows and eventually until the bottom of the pipe is gone. Clay does not corrode but its joints separate, and separated joints are where roots get in.
PVC changed this, and anything installed from the late 1970s forward is generally holding up well. So the age of the house is the first question we ask, because a 1965 home with original cast iron and a 1998 home with PVC are two completely different conversations.
Root intrusion.
Roots do not break into a sound pipe. They find an existing gap at a joint or a crack and then widen it as they grow.
Bellies.
A section that has settled below grade holds standing water. Solids drop out there and the line clogs in the same spot repeatedly.
Channeling.
In old cast iron, the bottom of the pipe corrodes away entirely and waste runs on soil. A camera shows this immediately and a cable does not fix it.
Offset joints.
Ground movement in sandy soil can shift one length of pipe out of line with the next, leaving a lip that catches everything passing.
Knowing Before You Dig
Sewer work gets expensive when it turns into exploratory digging, so we camera the line first and locate the problem to a depth and a distance before anything comes up. Knowing a break sits eleven feet out from the cleanout and four feet down is what turns a driveway-wide excavation into a targeted one.
It also settles the repair-or-replace question honestly. One offset joint in an otherwise sound line is a spot repair. A line that is channeled end to end is not, and we would rather show you the footage than ask you to take our word for it.

It depends on the damage. A small crack or root intrusion in a single section often allows a spot repair. Widespread damage, collapsed pipe, or old polybutylene material usually means replacement.

A camera inspection settles it. One offset joint or a single root intrusion in an otherwise sound line is a spot repair. A cast iron line that has corroded through along its length is not, and no amount of cleaning will hold it. We would rather show you the footage and let you see what we are seeing.
Multiple drains are backing up at once. What does that mean?
When several fixtures back up together the blockage is usually past the point where those lines join, which means the main rather than any one branch. Stop running water everywhere in the house, including appliances, and call us. Continuing to run water adds to whatever is coming back up.
My house was built in the 1960s. Should I be worried about the sewer line?
It is worth looking at. Homes from that era in Naples and Fort Myers were generally plumbed with cast iron under the slab, and cast iron has a finite life that many of those lines are now at the end of. Worried is the wrong word, informed is the right one, and a camera inspection is how you get there.
