Outdoor kitchens and gas grills are a staple of Southwest Florida living. The combination of year-round warmth, outdoor entertaining space, and the popularity of gas cooking in Collier and Lee County neighborhoods means that natural gas and LP propane lines are in constant use, and constant exposure to Florida's coastal environment.
Before you fire up the grill for the season, it is worth spending a few minutes checking the condition of your gas system. At A-1 Plumbing & Gas, we handle natural gas and LP propane installations and repairs across Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, and the surrounding area. Here is what our licensed gas plumbers recommend checking.
Natural gas is odorless in its pure form, which is why utility companies add mercaptan, the rotten egg smell most people recognize. If you detect that smell near a gas appliance, outdoor kitchen, grill line, or anywhere near your gas meter, do not attempt to diagnose the issue yourself.
Leave the area, avoid turning any light switches on or off, and call your gas utility from outside. Then call us at (239) 699-3144 for emergency gas line service.
The flexible corrugated metal line that connects your gas appliance to the wall or floor valve is a common failure point. Over time, these connectors can crack, kink, or corrode, especially in Florida's coastal air. Look for any visible damage, corrosion, or discoloration near the connection points.
Flexible connectors are inexpensive to replace and should be swapped out every 10 to 15 years as a precaution.
Each gas appliance in your home should have a dedicated shutoff valve, the quarter-turn ball valve located directly behind or below the unit. Turn each one to make sure it moves freely. A valve that is stuck or corroded is not reliable in an emergency and should be replaced.
In Marco Island, Fort Myers, and other coastal communities in Lee County, salt air accelerates corrosion on metal gas lines. If you have exposed black iron pipe running to an outdoor kitchen, grill pad, or pool heater, inspect it for rust spots or pitting. Surface rust is expected, but deep pitting or flaking indicates the line should be inspected by a licensed plumber.
With the grill burners off, turn on the gas supply valve and listen for any hissing near the connection. You can also apply a small amount of soapy water to threaded connections, bubbles indicate a gas escape. If you see bubbles or hear hissing, close the supply valve and call a licensed plumber before using the appliance.
If you are adding a new outdoor kitchen, extending a gas line to a generator, or connecting a pool heater, those jobs require a licensed plumber and permits from your county. A-1 Plumbing & Gas handles permitting in-house for both Collier and Lee County.
We also handle any gas leak diagnosis, valve replacement, or corroded line repair. Gas work is not a DIY job in Florida, state law requires a licensed contractor for gas line installations and repairs.
